IMS and telecom single point of failure management

A single point of failure (SPOF) is a part of a system that, if it fails, will stop the entire system from working. SPOFs are undesirable in any system with a goal of high availability or reliability, be it a telecombusiness practice, software application, or other system.

Unfortunately single points of failure (SPOF) can occur within a network, potentially resulting in costly downtime.

A telecom SPOF can mean one or more end users is cut off from their phone or internet connection.

How can engineers identify this SPOF to prevent the issue from occurring in the first place?

Defining a single point of failure with IMS

It can be difficult to catch a telecom SPOF before it arises, but this is where VC4’s Inventory & Management System (IMS) comes in, as it can carry out an assessment of a network to see where it might fail.

IMS does this by identifying the critical components of the network that would result in downtime in the event of a malfunction. The inventory system then alerts engineers of the issue, meaning they can work quickly to fix it and keep customers connected as much as possible.

After calculating their topologies and the current level of customer service, IMS will then highlight any single points of failure that are present.
